Feeling on the fence about trying some of the trends du jour? Don’t be! Our number one tip is to choose the trends that make you feel great, no matter how many candles are on your birthday cake. There really are no rules, so own your style by giving some of our favorite, fresh (and age-transcending) trends a try.
Here are the trends to try for 50 and beyond.
Sport Some Athleisure
Not just up-to-the-minute but also endlessly comfortable, athleisure is a trend we can all get behind. Try jogger pants in a fancy material (cashmere, silk, Tencel, etc.) with a button-down blouse or a sleek sweater, and a structured jacket. Fashion sneakers are also a staple of this trend, so be sure you’ve got a refined-looking pair at the ready to finish all your athleisure looks.
Lean into Longer Layers
Grazing the mid-calf, duster-length layers offer a modern twist on cardigans and jackets and can go a long way toward an elongating effect. Keep other elements of your look simple with solid knits, blouses and streamlined bottoms (pants, jeans or leggings) so the attention is squarely on your statement layer. A long pendant necklace and heels extend the look.
Get Back into Vintage Styles
What’s old is new again when vintage-inspired trends come back into focus. Revisit high-rises and reap the benefits of this waist-cinching, leg-elongating bottom fit. Pair with gently, half-tucked tops and blouses to highlight the look. Wider legs (yes, even full-on flares!) are also back, with their elongating, funky and feminine style. Pair these casually with a fitted knit top or elevate with a tie-detail blouse and a bright, structured handbag for a modern execution.
Try Tonal Outfitting
Pick a color (any color!) and choose pieces in varying shades of the same hue. Think a blush pullover with a peach-colored skirt, or an army green button-down with sage denim. Your shoes and accessories don’t necessarily have to participate—simple neutral styles like leopard flats or taupe suede booties can suffice.
Add Interesting Textures
Let’s start by saying that linen, leather, suede, silk and cashmere (either vegan or the real deal) belong in every woman’s closet at some capacity. Now might be the perfect time to step out of your comfort zone when it comes to these textures. How about a suede moto jacket or maybe even leather leggings? (These aren’t as scary as they sound, we promise!) Adding a dash of something exciting can really invigorate your aesthetic.
Know When to Opt Out
Trust your intuition and steer clear of what doesn’t feel right. If you’re not loving skinny bottoms, try equally-chic wide-leg or cropped straight-leg styles. Also, consider passing on overly exposing styles or saturated trends you’ve seen absolutely everywhere and are more likely to fizzle out. When in doubt, just dip your toes into a trend that piques your interest for a look that’s both current and classic.
With the right inspiration and plenty of instinct, you might find your most stylish years are yet to come!
