Keep reading for Swapna’s take on My Body, My Style.
How would you describe your body shape?
I’m what is popularly known as a pear shape. I tend to carry my weight in my hips and my thighs. I don’t know if people can change their body shape, but I’ve learned to accept it for what it is over time.
How would you describe your personal style?
It’s a mix of everything, but I love more feminine pieces. I’m also a mother to two young children, so I have to be more practical when I dress as I’m frequently bending down or chasing them around. All of my clothes have to be easy to care for—I’m not a dry clean-only type of woman!
Has your body shape informed the way that you dress?
Yes, absolutely! I’ve always had this body shape since I was a teenager, so it’s influenced my style quite a bit. Instead of hiding what people consider flaws, I choose to focus on my favorite part of me, which is my arms. I like to reach for sleeveless fit-and-flare dresses and peplum tops that accentuate my natural waist but also highlight my arms.
What is your go-to piece and why?
I grew up in India, where the weather was really warm, so I wore dresses and skirts a lot. Now, I live in New Jersey, where it’s quite cold, so my go-to pieces are a mix of what I grew up wearing and what’s seasonally relevant for where I live. My go-to pieces are influenced by the season now, so I usually reach for:
- Dresses: I have a lot of dresses that are fit-and-flare, sleeveless, and hit me right below my knee which is really flattering on me.
- Denim jacket: I wear it during all seasons and typically with cargo pants and a T-shirt or with a dress. Plus, if you ever feel like you’re overdressed, it’s a good way to bring the outfit “down” to a more casual level.
- Dark denim with no distressing: Another versatile staple that I have in my closet. I like to wear mine with sneakers and a tank top for a more casual look, or with heels and an off-the-shoulder top for a girls night out.
What outfit makes you feel amazing?
I have to come back to dresses. When I wear dresses, I feel feminine and strong. I love the ease of throwing something on and feeling done. Lately, I’ve also been leaning towards jumpsuits which can be feminine and casual, but figure-friendly too.
Any styling tips and tricks you can share?
I always try to add one “wow” piece to my outfits, like statement earrings or a purse. I also tend to try new things that are trending—but in my own way. For example, I noticed that moto jackets were trending but I just didn’t love the classic black ones. Then I found a blush pink leather version which was feminine and very much my style and I love wearing it. I’ve learned that sometimes you have to find a variation of a trend that fits your personal style.
