How to Dress for Your Body Type: A Guide to Every Shape

women with different body shapes

Your body shape is all about the natural proportions between your shoulders, bust, waist and hips—it’s about structure, not your size or weight. Understanding those proportions makes picking silhouettes, fits and styling details effortless, giving you total freedom to highlight what you love to show off.

At Stitch Fix, we believe every body should be celebrated—not restricted by old “do’s and don’ts” or told to hide “problem areas.” You get to decide what looks and feels good on you, and if you love something, you should wear it. That said, learning how to identify and dress for your body shape can simplify daily closet decisions and build your style confidence. Let’s dive in!

How to Identify Your Body Shape

Your body shape is simply the natural relationship between four key points: your shoulders, bust, waist and hips—and it’s entirely separate from your size or weight. To make daily dressing even easier, our Stylists will walk you through taking quick measurements, using our interactive shape calculator and exploring the five common body shapes you might resonate with most.

How to Measure Your Shoulders, Bust, Waist and Hips

Grab a flexible tape measure and stand in front of a mirror for your most accurate numbers. For best results, measure over form-fitting clothing or undergarments rather than bulky layers to capture your true fit.

  • Shoulders: Measure straight across your back from the outer edge of one shoulder bone to the other to establish your upper-body frame
  • Bust: Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level across your back to capture your top-half proportion
  • Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your natural waistline (usually just above your belly button) to gauge your midsection definition
  • Hips: Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and rear to complete your silhouette baseline.

Use the Body Shape Calculator

Plug your measurements into our body shape calculator to see which silhouette naturally aligns with your proportions.

  • Rectangle Shape (Hips and shoulders are in proportional alignment)
  • Oval Shape (also known as round)
