Symmetry is the key when dressing any body type. From what you’re describing, it sounds like your body is pear shaped. A majority of the population falls into this category & it is a beautiful shape to have! There are a few key styling tips to follow that will help you create the illusion of balance for your body type.
- Look for necklines that draw the eye outward so that your shoulders appear wider. For pear shapes, the shoulders are the most narrow part of you so in order to create an hourglass silhouette, you’ll need to look for boat necks, cowl necks or crew necks. These will help define your shoulders.
- Embellishments on your top half will achieve balanced proportions & give you dimension. Decorated shoulder trim, embroidered necklines and shorter necklace lengths will draw the eye upward. Jackets with shoulder pads or a defined shoulder seam will also aide in an illusion trick.
- Define your waist. You have a narrow waist, so flaunt it! Be sure to find tops that are streamlined throughout the torso so that your defined waist is the star. For jackets, opt for one that does not split out at the bottom to the sides. This is the equivalent of wearing arrows pointing to your hips.
- Tailored pants are key. When looking for the perfect pant, go for one that has minimal pockets and if possible, find a pair without front pockets. Front pockets can puff out at the hips which adds more dimension and interest in an area that we are trying to minimize. A straight leg pant or slight bootcut will create a lean silhouette & balance out the upper half.
